During the spring storms of 2017, the levée on the Audubon trail in Pescadero Marsh eroded to the point necessitating closing the trail. Two years brought even more erosion.

Funding Dedicated for the Upper Lighthouse Stabilization and Restoration Project
Coastside State Parks Association’s board members, local State Parks’ staff, and Pigeon Point supporters are extremely pleased with the news today. “California State Parks is dedicating $9.157 million towards the Upper Lighthouse Stabilization and Restoration Project.” The full press release from California State Parks is below.

The Oil Bunker at Pigeon Point
When the lighthouse at Pigeon Point was first lit in 1872, the fuel used was lard oil. The oil was kept liquid by storing it in tall cans, positioned close to a lit fire in the office attached to the tower.
It Takes Teamwork to Build a Fence
During the spring and summer of 2019, a team rebuilt 200-feet of dilapidated fence along the south bluff of Pigeon Point. Additional sections will be replaced in future years.

A New Project for Año Nuevo – Staging
This year we received a generous pledge from an Año Nuevo docent to kick off a fund to replace the building known as Staging at the entrance to the Natural Preserve. While State Parks’ staff had been thinking about possible ways to enhance interpretation at this spot, no firm plans were in place. So, with a blank canvas, we are reviewing ways to use this embryonic fund wisely and continue to improve the visitors’ experience, no matter what time of year. The Staging area is used both to start a guided tour with a docent during the breeding season and also as a mid-way point on the hike to see the seals during the rest of the year.
